Batteries and range
The boring answer first: most 'broken' remotes are batteries. Genuinely short range usually means interference (LED bulbs in the opener are a known culprit) or a failing receiver antenna.
Compatibility mismatches
Remotes, keypads, and openers must share a frequency/rolling-code family. Universal accessories cover most brands — but not all, and older openers are pickier.
Old fixed-code technology
